Robber shot dead in Richards Bay showdown

Police had been following the suspect's car for two days.


One house robbery suspect was shot dead last night by police, and another is in hospital following a shootout during a foiled housebreaking attempt in Brackenham, KwaZulu-Natal, last night, Zululand Observer reports.

Members of the Empangeni Flying Squad, Empangeni K9 Unit as well as tracking company Tracker honed in on five men in the process of breaking into a home in Airfern Angle at about 9pm on Wednesday.

A gun battle ensued after the suspects opened fire at police, who returned shots.

The Zululand Observer reported that the VW Polo the suspects were using was stolen on Moberley Road in Empangeni on Monday night.

Police were tracking the vehicle for two days and were following the suspects in an unmarked car when the break-in occurred.

Two suspects were not injured and taken into police custody, while the K9 Unit searched into the early hours of this morning for suspect number five, who eluded capture.
