Markers concerned about not being compensated for exam scripts

But the education department says markers have no reason to worry.

While the country celebrates the outcome of the matric class of 2016 last week, some of the teachers who marked the examination scripts claim to be owed pay by the department of education, Mpumalanga News reports.

An angry marker who called Mpumalanga News said the department promised to pay them in full on December 23 last year, but not all of them were paid.

“Some of us never received our stipends, and now the results are out, and the exams offices are closed. We were just left stranded and don’t know what to do next,” said the complainant, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Jasper Zwane, spokesperson for education, said markers should not worry about being compensated, as the department was paying them in groups like previous years.

“There is no problem regarding the payment of markers. We pay them in different runs. Some runs were done today [Monday], and others will receive their salary on Thursday. Every year we pay them in the same fashion. Maybe the ones complaining are new in the system, they must not worry; they will receive their salaries. We already paid some, and others will be paid this week,” he emphasised.

Zwane also thanked all markers for their sterling job during the marking of the 2016 matric exam papers. “We must say, we really appreciate their good work in marking the exam scripts.”
