Two departmental officials arrested for selling ARVs

They were arrested after the buyers informed the police.


Two officials from the department of health were arrested together with other two people on Saturday after being implicated in the theft of ARVs at Kanyamazane clinic in Mpumalanga, Mpumalanga News reports.

The two officials, a pharmacy assistant and a professional nurse, were arrested after the two other suspects informed the police they got the pills from the two departmental officials.

After questioning the two departmental officials, police arrested them.

It is not the first time such an incident has occurred at the clinic. On August 2 last year, a lay counsellor stationed at the clinic was arrested by the police and also suspended by the department for the same crime.

On Friday the lay counsellor was officially dismissed by the department. The department has instituted an investigation into the matter. The two officials will be suspended in due course.
