WATCH: Surfer braves monster Durban waves

We've also collected other footage of how the giant waves have been bullying Durban's beaches.

Abnormal weather conditions rocked the coastal cities of Cape Town and Durban on Sunday, and many have taken to social media to share their videos of cyclists struggling to stay on their feet, let alone their bikes, in strong winds, and of massive swells at Durban’s North Beach.

Storm Report SA posted a video compilation on their Facebook page of the weather experienced in Cape Town and Durban on Sunday:

While the SA Weather Service urged people not to swim at Durban’s North Beach until the wave activity, caused by a tropical disturbance in the ocean, returned to normal, according to EWN on Monday, a daring surfer took to the water on Sunday to ride the massive waves. The moment was captured on video.

The effect of the devastating waves in Durban has reportedly been felt at businesses along the North Beach coastline. East Coast Radio Newswatch reports that a director at the Mochachos restaurant, located on the coastline, described how water washed into the restaurant. Staff and customers reportedly ran for safety.

Storm Report SA also posted a video from another unknown source on Facebook, which showed how people watching the massive waves had to run for safety when one wave broke on the promenade. A man, visibly panicked, grabbed a child and tried to escape from the rush of water, and both he and the child fell in the process:

On Twitter, East Coast Radio shared a video, courtesy of Trevor van Zijl, and said the waves were up to eight-feet high.

Netcare 911 paramedics took to their Twitter page to warn the public of the rough sea conditions.

On Monday, there was a surge in swell size at Winklespruit Beach on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast, but the Southlands Sun reports that the effect was not as devastating as that experienced on Durban’s North Beach on Sunday.
