Family and friends attend Joost van der Westhuizen’s private funeral

Delegates from various rugby unions were also seen making their way to the church.


Family and friends of late Springbok legend Joost van der Westhuizen gathered at the Lewende Woord church in Brummeria, Pretoria, on Friday morning to attend his private funeral, reports the Pretoria East Rekord.

The former Springbok captain died on Monday, February 6, after a long battle with motor neuron disease.

Friends of the late Van Der Westhuizen arrived on their motorbikes dressed in their rugby shirts and created a drive-though on Brummeria Road with their motorbikes to the church driveway.

Delegates from various rugby unions were also seen making their way to the church as well as former Springbok lock, Kobus Wiese, former prop Toks van der Linde, current SA rugby coach Alistair Coetzee and local soap star Johan Scholtz were also spotted.

The world rugby president landed in SA on Thursday ahead of the funeral.
