Explosion heard across Ekurhuleni a mystery for now

Law enforcement ruled out illegal miners as the cause.

Some people commented on the Benoni Community Group that they heard the explosion in MacKenzie Park, Rynfield, Morehill and Brakpan, Benoni City Times reports.

People were speculating that it may have been due to illegal mining.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster commander Major-General Poobalan Subbiah said police found no evidence that it was linked to illegal mining. He also said they were monitoring the situation.

In the past, explosions emanating from The New Reclamation Group in Dunswart were reported.

Byron Cochran, branch manager at the Dunswart site, said: “Sunday night’s explosion could not have been the fault of the group, as there had been no production on Sunday. I can say for a fact that it was not us because we did not operate yesterday. Saturday was the last time we operated.”

He said the surrounding residents have been “a lot happier in the last three weeks”,  as the company has been working closely with locals to minimise disruptions caused by explosions.
