MiWay says it knows the individual behind the fake ‘racist’ email

The company came under fire last week after a snapshot of an email which referred to black people as 'baboobs' circulated on social media.

Insurance company, Miway has reiterated that a ‘racist and offensive’ social media post alleged to have been sent to a client by its staff member was fake.

The company came under fire last week after a snapshot of an email which referred to black people as ‘baboobs’ circulated on social media.

The email read:

“This is a reminder of yesterdays managers meeting. The final decisions was to reject 90% of claims made by black people as from 1 August 2017. They are an easy target, its also a great opportunity to save money and punish these black baboons.”

The company released a statement on Tuesday after launching an investigation last week and revealed that it knows the individual behind the ‘fake’ email but would not divulge details for now.

MiWay CEO, René Otto said: “We have received the full report from independent forensic auditors, which conclusively proves that the email is a fake and did not originate from MiWay or its staff. The audit has also identified the individual responsible.”

He said the company has decided not to publish the report yet and provide the client with the opportunity to respond first.

“Once we have received feedback, we will be in a position to elaborate on the way forward.”

Independent forensic auditors, Cyanre – The Digital Forensic Lab, which investigated the email confirmed that the post was manipulated by an external source.

“The image circulating on social media is a fabrication.”
