Mob beats two suspected thieves to death for allegedly stealing scaffolding

Police took the suspects to the police station, where one of them died on arrival.

Two suspected thieves were beaten to death by a mob at a construction site in Kaalfontein, Johannesburg, after they were allegedly found stealing scaffolding, Midrand Reporter reports.

The victims, aged 27 and 29, were part of a group of 11 men who were allegedly found stealing scaffolding early in the morning.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the 11 men severely beaten by the mob, and the scaffolding had been loaded on to a bakkie belonging to one of the men.

Police took the suspects to the police station, where one of them died on arrival.

Six of the men were taken to hospital for treatment, where one of them succumbed to his injuries and died shortly after arrival.

Four remain in police custody and will appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court to face charges of theft.

No arrests have been made yet for the mob attack.

Station commander of Ivory Park Police Station Brigadier David Ngcobo expressed shock at the gruesome murders and beatings of the suspects. He called on residents to continue helping the police within the confines of the law.

“The suspects were caught in possession of stolen property, and there was no need for any person to take the law into their own hands, except to hand the suspects over to the police,” said Ngcobo.
