‘Bread truck’ busted in alleged human trafficking case

Twenty-one women, 12 children and five men were found inside the truck.

A total of 38 people were rescued from suspected human traffickers.

Garsfontein station commander Colonel Kerwin Solomons said he received a tip-off three weeks ago that a truck would be driving through Plastic View in the early hours of March 31, Rekord East reported.

Garsfontein police spokesperson Captain Ilze Jones said the police, the Hawks and home affairs organised a stakeout and spotted the truck, with branding from a bakery, around 2am.

Jones said 21 women, 12 children and five men were found inside the truck.

She said none of the occupants had documentation.

Three men were arrested.

The men appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Jones said home affairs was attending to the victims and would take the necessary steps forward.
