On arrival, paramedics established that the vehicle had ignited after colliding with a power box.

Investigations are ongoing after one person burned to death and another is in a critical condition following an accident near King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

The driver of a Mercedes Benz apparently lost control of the car along the link road between Watson Highway and the airport, Northglen News reported.

“At around 12.45am, Rescue Care received a report of the accident. On arrival, it was established that the vehicle had ignited after colliding with a power box,” said Rescue Care’s Ismail Mitha.

He added a female occupant of the car was declared dead on-scene and that the male occupant is in a critical condition and was transported to a hospital for further treatment. All emergency services were in attendance.

According to King Shaka International Airport South African Police Service station’s Colonel Musa Myende, a docket of culpable homicide has been opened.
