Alleged hijackers open fire on police

When the suspects realised they were being chased by the police, they opened fire.

A shootout between alleged hijackers and police ensued in the east of Pretoria after a car hijacking incident.

It is believed the vehicle was hijacked in Bronkhorstspruit on Saturday, Rekord East reported.

It is also alleged the armed hijackers rolled the Volkswagen Polo on the N4 near Simon Vermooten Road after a shootout between themselves and the police.

Brinant Security spokesperson Martin Barnard said the victim came from KwaMhlanga and gave a lift to two hitchhikers who then hijacked the vehicle.

Barnard said when the suspects realised they were being chased by the police, they opened fire

“Police returned fire and the suspects lost control over the vehicle and fled on foot.”

He said one firearm was recovered in the vehicle.

It is still unclear if the men were apprehended or not, as police were not available for comment.
