Nostalgia rules at the home of historic car racing in SA
Historic car racing returned to its true South African home in style on Saturday, during round two of the 2014 Midas Historic Tour at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria.
VINTAGE. Mike Schmidt (Frankie’s Capri Perana) won the opening Marlboro Historic Saloon Car race.
Topping the day’s activities were two races for SKF Pre-1966 Production Cars.
Both went to Franco Scribante in his Remos Ford Mustang GT350.
On the first occasion he was followed across the line by Jonathan du Toit (TAR Chev Nova) and Mark du Toit (TAR Chevelle). Front-runner Ferdi van Niekerk (Double F Ford Mustang) spun his car within sight of the finish line on the final lap, to lose a certain third place.
In race two Jonathan du Toit broadsided the Chev Nova while running up front, leaving Mark du Toit to take the second spot from Ferdi van Niekerk, Jonathan du Toit and Clive Densham (Alfa Giulia).
Mark du Toit (Lola T70 Spyder) won both the races for Pre-1966 Le Mans Sports and GT Cars.
On both occasions he led Ross Lazarus (Lazarus Ford GT40), Oliver Dalais (Marboro Crand Ford GT40), Peter Lindenberg (ION Daytona Coupe) and Terry Wilford (Daytona Coupe).
Both events for Consolidated Auctioneers Pre-1984 Sports and GT cars went to Franco Scribante (Chevron B19).
Both times, he was chased to the flag by Jonathan du Toit (Chevron B8) and Dino Scribante (Porsche RSR).
Marc Miller (Alfa Giulia) won the first race for SKF Pre-1966 “Little Giant” cars, leading home Thomas Falkiner (GSM Dart) and Chad ten Doeschate (GSM Dart).
Frank Copping won the next time around, ahead of Ishmael Baloyi and Roger Houston (CTR MGB). Mike Schmidt (Frankie’s Capri Perana) won the opening Marlboro Historic Saloon Car race from Anton Raaths (Actor Pharma Mazda Coupe) and Andre’ Diedericks (Elftrans Chev Camaro).
The Capri expired on the warm-up lap for race two. That left Diedericks to win from Raaths and Neil Reynecke (Exclusive Chev CanAm).
The opening Investchem Formula Ford Kent race was red-flagged after 30 seconds, when four cars crashed in unison going into the first corner.
The second race was won by Matthys Strydom (Sage Ford Kent), followed by Ian Schofield (Investchem Mygale) and Andrew Schofield (Investchen Reynard).
Jeff Gable (Taylon Toyota Birkin) won the first Sabat Batteries Lotus Challenge race from James Forbes (Toyota Birkin) and Klippies Krige (Lotus 7 Replica).
The second time around Krige took the victory from Gable and Glen Clark (CWR Toyota Birkin).
Nic Clark (AVO Suspension Titan) was the overall winner of the Historic Single Seater category, leading home Patrick Dunseith (Ford Merlyn) and Ron Liddiard (Ford Lotus).
Overall winner of the handicap based Marque Cars category was Barry Scott (Ford Escort RS, ahead of Kevin Taylor (Ford Capri 3000), Kobus Brits (Porsche 911), Michelle Scott (Ford Escort) and Colin Kean (Mercedes-Benz).
