Small but it packs a punch

The rally-bred GR Yaris came out tops.

Serious petrolheads are nuts about performance tests in which different vehicles are pitted against one another. TopGear SA recently tested a selection of supercars, saloons, hot hatches and GT cars at the Phakisa Raceway in the Free State. The rally-bred GR Yaris came out tops. “It’s user-adjustable, GR-Four all-wheel drive system and eager, free-revving 198kw three-cylinder turbocharged engine deliver a performance package reminiscent of the analogue sport sedans and hatches of the ’90s and 2000s. Coupled with a slick (and weighted) six-speed manual transmission and lightweight, rally-optimised construction, the GR Yaris is a true driver’s car in the purest sense of the word,” said TopGear. “Winning the TopGear SA performance car of the year title just goes to reinforce the reputation that the GR Yaris has garnered in the global motoring space. We are very proud of its achievements. While we often use marketing phrases like ‘rally car for the road’, it’s a solid validation for Toyota and Gazoo Racing to have a group of experienced motoring journalists pick the GR Yaris as their best performance car, among pretty esteemed company and other sports brands,” said Glenn Crompton, vice president of marketing of Toyota SA Motors.
