How to decorate like a pro

If you want to give your home a makeover but have no idea where to begin, these simple tips will help you get started.

Find your style

The most important thing when it comes to decorating your home is to know what your style is. Start by creating a Pinterest mood board with looks that inspire you and embody you and your family, not the latest trends. An on-trend white leather couch is not going to survive in a house full of kids and pets.

Write down a plan

You need to work out exactly what you want to do, how long it’s going to take and your budget. Have you considered lighting and things that may need to be repaired, for example, such as wall cracks or waterproofing?

Create a base

Once you know what your style, plans and budget are, you can start to work on your foundation. It’s always a good idea to keep wall colours and bigger pieces of furniture in neutral shades of beige, cream and grey and then add colour later. Colour can make or break a space so take your time and tread carefully.

Mix it up

Mixing old and new is a great way to prevent a space looking like a staged showroom so consider items you already have that can work with your style. Play with different combinations until you find one you like. Don’t be afraid to experiment – you’ll be amazed how fabulous an orchid looks in an old brass cooking pot.

Plan your purchases

You don’t want to spend too much on the wrong things so plan why you need. Invest in one good piece that will last rather than lots of little ones that you’ll end up regretting in a few months.

Go green

Greenery adds a sense of life to the design of a room and it lasts well so use it.

Add texture

Layer your space with different textures to create dimension; think baskets, blankets, cushions, vases, natural wood and brass tones.

Bit of black

It’s often said by top designers that every room needs a touch of black to ground the space; it could be anything from the curtain rods to a picture frame or even an ornament.

Display personal items

Make a house a home by displaying your photographs, collectables or family heirlooms.
