Zululanders do unto others…

Donations far exceeded organisers' expectations

SUNDAY saw the first floating music concert in Richards Bay as the Zululand Multi Sport Club hosted its inaugural Worship on the Water event in aid of the Richards Bay soup kitchen.

The afternoon’s entertainment started with Dial Up from Grantleigh.

Richards Bay Baptist Church’s band Echo Worship then took the stage, followed by the Richards Bay Community Church band, while Fusion Worship from Outlook Church rounded off the day.

Almost fully sold out (300 tickets) and with all proceeds going to the soup kitchen, R23 000 was raised from ticket sales and other donations, and Mainly Coffee’s R2 000 takings were also donated.

An anonymous donor then matched the R25 000, bringing the grand total to a staggering R50 000.

Zululand Cleaning Specialists donated their cleaning services to the soup kitchen’s building, while uMfolozi Wood Creations sponsored tables and chairs.

‘For a while now I’ve wanted to put together a Jesus rock concert,’ said event MC and co-organiser Keith Eaton of K and R Entertainment.

‘And when Casper (Kriel) suggested we have it on the water, it seemed like a really good idea.’

Richards Bay soup kitchen is a charity project run by five churches within the Richards Bay fraternal.

A first for Richards Bay, Sunday’s Worship on the Water proved popular among locals who wholeheartedly supported the initiative

It feeds between 40 and 60 people five days a week and more than 100 on Sundays.

‘The money will go a very long way to help feed Richards Bay’s homeless over the festive season and beyond,’ said Richards Bay Baptist Church Pastor Jason Currie.

‘But apart from the money, the community support of the event cements what we are doing, and for that we are incredibly grateful.’

‘We thought an event like this would generate support from the community, but the turnout and generous donations far exceeded our expectations,’ said co-organisers and hosts, Casper and Igna Kriel of the Zululand Multi Sport Club.

The club is considering making Worship on the Water a quarterly event and those who wish to get involved can contact them on zmsc@telkomsa.net.

The soup kitchen is in desperate need of volunteers for their Christmas dinner on Sunday.

Those wanting to get involved can contact Derrick Schwartz on 060 7408805.
