Germans delight in ‘out of Africa’ sightings

Dolphins perform for German film star

A LAND break from their passenger liner cruise aboard the MS Amadea, which docked in Richards Bay last week, proved an unforgettable highlight for a young German film star and her mother.

Janina Fautz (21), a household name in European TV and film circles, with mom Petra had chosen to spend their shore break in the Bay and began with a trip to the Enseleni Nature Reserve.

‘We locals are very spoilt and tend to forget how much foreign people appreciate what we see almost daily,’ said tour guide Anand Naidoo of Bush & Beach tours.

‘We encountered a herd of impala and were absolutely thrilled at the sight,’ said Janina.

But the best was yet to come as Anand took them to the dolphin lookout platform at Alkantstrand.

‘We struck double luck in the late afternoon,’ said Anand.

‘Not only did a few Humpback dolphins appear and hang around for ages, we had the fortune of bumping into local ‘dolphin ambassador’ Dave Savides, who shared so much information on these incredible mammals.

‘My guests jumped with joy every time one surfaced; they were overwhelmed at the sight of these creatures in their natural environment.’

Indeed, the visitors said they refuse to see caged animals in zoos or to visit dolphinaria.

‘We have never experienced anything like this,’ said Janina, who whooped with joy at every sighting.

‘Richards Bay is such a beautiful place; we envy you for what you have here and we will take back such special memories to our little village in Germany.’

Among many other roles, Janina starred as Erna in The White Ribbon (2009) and as Sarah in Wir Monster (2015) and has been nominated in minor categories at both the Oscar and Emmy awards.
