Plan now for the PSL

As a nation that enjoys a wonderful outdoor climate, sport is part of defining who we are

SPORT – like music – has an amazing ability to unite people across a wide cross section of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Not only do the on-field exploits of professional athletes thrill us as we witness their talents, they become our heroes, inspiration and role models.

As South Africans, we have in unity celebrated the achievements of our rugby world cup winners, Africa soccer champs, Olympians, athletes, swimmers, golfers and the like.

As a nation that enjoys a wonderful outdoor climate, sport is part of defining who we are.

Closer to home, we are presently enjoying looking at the National First Division soccer log and cheering Thanda Royal Zulu’s unbeaten eight match streak.

(Those who have never been down to the uMhlathuze Stadium to see them live are depriving themselves of a great spectacle, with a super vibe in the stands as well as on the field.)

They have been there before but sadly have failed at the last hurdle, but once again the Amabhubesi are showing every prospect of being in the running for PSL promotion at the end of the season.

What a boost for the city and the district that would be; domestic tourism numbers would explode with the big name sides coming to town.

We saw it two seasons ago, when Thanda came within a whisker of beating the mighty Orlando Pirates.
But there are huge red flags grabbing our attention.

In order to meet PSL criteria, the home stadium will need a major upgrade.

Seating capacity would have to be increased fourfold. This is possible, as there is ample space on the side opposite the present grandstand, as well as behind the goals at each end of the ground.

Floodlighting of the highest standard would have to be erected. Fortunately this is already at an advanced stage and it was positive at the most recent City Exco meeting to hear the urgency and seriousness with which the PSL potential is being recognised.

But time is of the essence. The NFD promotion/relegation play-offs take place in June next year and the new season commences in August – far too little time to start getting a stadium ready for PSL matches.

What a pity it would be if Thanda do make it to the top flight…but will be forced to play their home matches at Moses Mabhida because our home stadium was inadequate.
