Kayla steps up for Miss SA title

'You don’t have to be like everyone else, be yourself'

IT’s what every little girl dreams of – wearing the coveted Miss SA crown.

Mtunzini’s Kayla Malherbe may not be a little girl any more – she’s a statuesque professional model who has appeared in numerous glossy magazine spreads – but she is one step closer to living her dream of carrying the Miss South Africa title.

She was last week named as a finalist for the title.

Kayla attended Mtunzini Primary School and Richards Bay Primary School before graduating from Pietermaritzburg Girls High School, and is currently a full-time professional model contracted to Fusion Models in Cape Town.

She says she wants to be Miss South Africa because she feels she could ‘help young women understand that it’s not what you have on the outside, but what’s inside’.

‘Young people today are so consumed with social media and always in competition with one another that they don’t realise what is actually going on around them. I also want to help people who have addictions, and want to get children off the streets and give them a better life.’

Kayla believes that Miss South African should be true to who she is.

‘She should not only be beautiful, but also inspire the whole of South Africa to want to make a change for the better. You don’t have to be like everyone else, be yourself.

‘There is so much pressure on young women today to look like those models in glamour and fashion magazines.’

She admits admits that she is ‘really quite shy’, and cites Charlize Theron as her role model.

‘She is an incredible woman who inspires women from South Africa to always keep their dreams alive and to have faith that dreams do come true. She also supports a number of animal and children charities here in South Africa that are close to my heart.’

The Miss SA finalists are currently at Sun City taking part in various media tours and preliminary judging categories.
