Chasing their Sarafina dream

This trio will start workshops with legendary Mbongeni Ngema in Johannesburg this month as part of their final trials

THREE Zululand entertainers are performing their way to the top.

Mthandeni Mbambo (31) of Ngwelezana, Nondumiso Cebekhulu (31) of eSikhaleni and Nonjabulo Zikhali (25) of Empangeni have been selected for the final auditions of the popular theatre show, Sarafina.

This trio will start workshops with legendary Mbongeni Ngema in Johannesburg this month as part of their final trials.

These talented actors wowed the judges with their performances during the Durban auditions and outshone thousands of other hopefuls.

Mthandeni Mbambo
This Ngwelezana actor is known for several roles in both theatre and television.

His is part of the SABC 1 soapie Uzalo’s cast, and recently featured in the South African movie Skorokoro.

Last month he made an appearance in the Mzansi Magic drama, Rockville, and was selected for the role of Shaka Zulu in the upcoming show, Death of the Emperor.

Mbambo is also involved at Ferguson Films and in the international musical, Afrika My Home.

‘Working with Ngema is every artist’s dream and I am over the moon to be given a chance to be part of his show once again,’ said Mbambo.

Nondumiso Cebekhulu
This eSikhaleni-born actor, musician, dancer and television presenter is one of the emerging stars from this region.

Dumo, as she is known to many, is an all-round performer and featured in many entertainment productions.

Zululanders will remember her work on the popular theatre show, Bhambatha kaMancinza.

She toured to Germany, Italy, Austria, South Korea, China and France as part of the Power of Africa cast in 2007 and 2008.

She has worked as a dancer and backup vocalists for artists such as Arthur Mafokate, Kwela Tebza and Mbongeni Ngema.

In television she worked as a presenter and producer on 1KZN TV, and was featured as a guest presenter on the SABC 1 traditional music show, Roots.

She is also the King Cethwayo District Municipality’s ambassador.

Nonjabulo Zikhali
A University of Zululand drama graduate, Zikhali is originally from Estcourt but is now settled in Empangeni.

This young bubbly performer has also worked on several productions, including The Embrace and Drama for Life which toured to Johannesburg in 2013.

She was also part of a traditional musical show, Vuka Afrika, in 2015.

Nonjabulo is currently working with an eSikhaleni Arts and Culture project currently performing their rhino anti-poaching play, which is being showcased in high schools around the region.
