Jaco’s ‘Alkandstrand’ nominated for Ghoemas 2017

He describes his music as a mixture of Neil Diamond, country songs, golden oldies and Afrikaans country

A Dream pursued is new reality birthed.

If you can see it, feel it and taste it, you can have it.

And so, local music man, Jaco Nortje, has realised his dream to share a stage with some of the most prominent names in the South African music industry and is now on his way to become a star in own right.

Jaco released his first CD last Friday entitled Gaan vir Goud, when he played in for Robbie Wessels at the Richards Bay Country Club.

The track Alkantstrand has been nominated for the Ghoemas 2017 and he also recently concluded a contract with Mad Events.

Other tracks on the new release, include favourites such as Suspicious Minds, ‘Have you ever seen the rain and Gambler.

He describes his music as a mixture of Neil Diamond, country songs, golden oldies and Afrikaans country.

Jaco is no stranger to the stage. At 11 years of age, he was already playing the drums in his father’s band and participated in several ‘Boeremusiek’ competitions.

In the early 90s, he started his own band of which he was the lead singer, but after leaving school, getting hitched to Heidi and raising two beautiful daughters, he dedicated his time exclusively to his young family.

In 2010, Jaco lost his father and decided to continue his dad’s music legacy and dream for his son to be on stage with the big names.

Two years later, he entered ‘Die Sanger’ competition and ended in the top twenty.

In 2013, he had his first opportunity to perform at the Dolos Festival, which aims at introducing and showcasing local talent.

‘It was an unbelievable experience,’ he says.

And there was more to come.

‘I started performing at the St Lucia Hippo Festival, the Mtunzini Music Festival, Richards Bay Port Festival and the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Dolos Festival.

‘I opened the main stage for stars such as Ray Dyllan, Theuns Jordaan, Manie Jackson and Adam Tas.

‘I trust that God will use my music and the talents He gave me, to touch people’s lives, to bring them joy and to leave them with a positive experience.

Jaco also had a lucky draw after selling his first hundred CDs – a two-day breakaway to the Sailfish Inn Guest House, sponsored by Maritza Vermaak.

The lucky winner was Sifiso Madondo.
