Fun fest at Hippo Festival

Zululanders invaded St Lucia to celebrate the town's heritage

FOOD, drinks and music ruled supreme at the annual Hippo Festival at the weekend as Zululanders invaded St Lucia to celebrate the town’s heritage.

Event organiser Rudi Redinger said because of its strategic location next to the Isimangaliso World Heritage site, St Lucia attracts scores of tourists into the area, therefore hosting the Hippo Festival was the ideal way of showcasing what the town offers.

‘Zululand is known for its beauty and St Lucia is its crown. This is our way of bringing together the different cultures.’

A variety of stalls selling art, curios, hand-made crafts and food were dotted all over.

Local artists such as Melinda de Villiers provided musical entertainment, while the Miss Teen St Lucia show attracted cheers from the crowds.

Chosen the overall winner, Richards Bay High Grade 9 beauty Chané Badenhorst will be the face for St Luica for the next 12 months.

Badenhorst is also a finalist in the national Miss Mini RSA pageant in October.

Second Princess was Chané Badenhorst (of Pongola and cousin of the overall winner), with Thabile Mathe selected as First Princess.
