Rip-roaring fun planned for St Lucia Hippo Festival

Not only will there be the traditional food, arts and crafts stalls, but something for everyone - from arm wrestling to belly dancing and fire-blowing, the announcement of Miss St Lucia, as well as a Beer Pong competition.

Whether it’s wining and dining in style, dancing an Irish jig or merely relaxing in the pleasant winter sun surrounded by the beauty of St Lucia listening to the strains of some of South Africa’s most talented musicians – this is the place to be!

It’s best you start saving every cent now so that you can make that trip down the coast to St Lucia at the end of the month for the St Lucia Hippo Festival.

Not only will there be the traditional food, arts and crafts stalls, but something for everyone – from arm wrestling to belly dancing and fire-blowing, the announcement of Miss St Lucia, as well as a Beer Pong competition.

Festivities begin on the evening of Friday, 29 July with a ‘Great Gatsby’ party which includes a three-course meal and dancing to the strains of the 1925 Boy Band, who will be joined on stage by guest artists Mathys Roets and Hunter.

This is an opportunity to dress up 1920s-style (the attire is encouraged, but not compulsory) and totally let your hair down for the evening.

The cost is R250pp; the venue is the St Lucia Municipal Town Hall transformed into the Gatsby Mansion; and booking is essential!

Saturday, 30 July
This action-packed day begins at 9am and continues through to 11pm.

While you browse through the stalls or watch the live entertainment, there’s more than enough to keep your children occupied.

The potjiekos competition will titillate your taste buds and you will have the opportunity to sample the culinary attempts.

The St Lucia Ratepayers’ Association raises funds annually to beautify the town and this year’s fund-raiser will contribute towards the commissioning of statues of a hippo family which will be positioned at the entrance of St Lucia to welcome visitors.

‘All proceeds of this annual event are ploughed back into the town,’ says organiser Amanda de Gaspary.
