Alexandra’s stage is set

'I've come to realise this is more than something you just do' - Alexandra Pillay

WITH just two months to go before her appearance at the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS) Convention in Orlando, USA, 14-year-old Alexandra Pillay is well on track to deliver her best performance yet.

The Richards Bay teenager attended her final boot camp with Just You Model & Artist Management at the beginning of April, meeting like-minded performers and taking advantage of the group’s natural chemistry, tips and support to enhance her own stage persona.

‘I’ve come to realise this is more than something you just do,’ said Alexandra.

‘It’s a means to fulfil your dreams, and won’t ever be just another job.’

Under guidance of Just You talent scout Elsubie Verlinden and dance instructor Lawrence Passens, Alexandra has finalised the acts she will be judged on in July, planned her outfits, done the photo shoots and drawn up her schedule. Her acts include a solo and duo dance, acting out a TV commercial and monologue, as well as showcasing her creative runway and photographic modelling portfolio.

‘We’re really proud of how far she’s come,’ said her parents, Vinod and Rowena Pillay. ‘She has really stepped up to the opportunity and we think whatever comes of it will only better her as a person.’

Until July, Alexandra’s focus will be back on excelling at school, and she has just one more formal training session planned.

‘There’s not much more for me to do except practice, practice practice,’ she said.

Alexandra’s trip is entirely self-funded and private donations go a long way to keeping her on course to the main stage.
