On this day in history: Rock stars sing at California Jam 2

On March 18, 1978, Aerosmith, Santana, Heart, Dave Mason, Ted Nugent and Mahogany Rush all appeared at the California Jam II festival, Ontario, California.

Rock heavyweights entertained a crowd of more than 300 000 people at the second California Jam Festival in Ontario on March 18, 1978.

The festival featured a variety of acts from across the rock and roll spectrum. There were scorching performances from Aerosmith, Santana, Heart, Dave Mason, Ted Nugent, Mahogany Rush, Fleetwood Mac and other big names in 1970s rock music.

The concert helped pave the way for all-day festivals to become the routine big-business events they are today. The sequel to California Jam meant that the organisers had the benefit of learning from past festival mistakes and fix these problems to improve the experience for music lovers. The first California Jam in 1974 had broke records for the loudest amplification system ever installed, the highest paid attendance, and highest gross in history.
