Top 5 must watch surfing flicks

WATCH trailers to the Top 5 surf movies of all time.

JUST to get you into the mood to grab a board and hit the waves, here are our three favourite surfing movies:

Chasing Mavericks

This movie takes you through the life of one of the most celebrated surfers of all time.

It follows Jay Moriarity as he is rescued by a surfer from drowning at only 8 years old.

He goes on to become, arguably, one of the best surfers in the world, and the movie details his road up to surfing the legendary Mavericks Reef break in California.

It’s a must watch, even if you don’t like surfing, simply as a truly inspirational story.

Surfer, Dude

A bit of a weird take on the ‘dude’ culture in surfing, but hilariously funny. It tells the story of Steve Addington, a soul-searching surfer who experiences an existential crisis when no waves come for over a month.

The Endless Summer

This seminal 1966 surf doccie follows two surfers, Mike Hynson and Robert August on a surfing trip around the world.

As the title suggests, they boys literally chase summer in their search for new surfing spots, in Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Tahiti and Hawaii.

Soul Surfer

This is a 2011 American biopic sports drama about surfer, Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack.

Bolstered by the love of her parents and refusing to give up, she plans to return to competition, although questions about her future continue to trouble her.

Upon seeing the devastation in Thailand caused by the 2004 tsunami, Bethany discovers a greater purpose: to make a difference in the lives of others.

Point Break

The 1991 American action crime thriller refers to the surfing term point break, where a wave breaks as it hits a point of land jutting out from the coastline.

FBI agent Johnny Utah is investigating a string of bank robberies possibly being committed by surfers. Johnny goes undercover to infiltrate the surfing community and develops a complex friendship with Bodhi, the charismatic leader of a gang of surfers.

Check out the remake of the movie, scheduled to be out this Christmas.
