NOT only are they able to fill stadiums with their sold-out concerts, they are also known to have fans screaming their lungs out at music festivals.

So who are the South African chart-topping rock stars who dominating the music industry?

1. Arno Carstens – the lead singer of the Springbok Nude Girls has released 10 albums, and has successfully gone on to become a top solo artist. He has had over 20 top ten singles, won five South African Music Awards and shared the stage with legends of the music world, including U2, The Rolling Stones and REM. Carstens has also toured extensively not only in SA, but internationally to the UK, Europe and the USA.

2. The Parlotones – described as a rock, pop, indie and alternative band, the four-member group is not only making waves in the local industry, but also in Germany, the UK and the USA. The group have released six albums and have spent months on the road in the Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and North America. They have also toured in South America, Canada, Australia, Japan and Russia alongside Coldplay, Starsailor, Snow Patrol and Blue October.

3. Die Antwoord – the local rave group formed in 2008 is made up of rappers Ninja, Yolandi Visser and DJ Hi-Tek. After releasing their debut album ‘$O$’ online for free, they attracted loads of international attention which landed them a record deal with Interscope Records. The local band has performed at the Coachella Music Festival in front of 40 000 people, and has already taken their music to New Zealand and Australia. And lest we forget, their celebrity fan is Paris Hilton.

4. Matthew Mole – he became the first SA artist to enter iTunes at No 1 with his debut album titled ‘The Home We Built’. The 21-year-old Cape Town resident beat off stiff competition from international superstars Jay Z, The Rolling Stones, Michael Bublè and Robin Thicke to top the chart. Aside from attracting international attention, the singer has already been chosen as Record Of The Day in the UK and is climbing the international music charts.

5. Karen Zoid – also known as SA’s queen of rock, the public icon was introduced to the music scene more than 15 years ago with her album titled ‘Poles Apart’. Over time, Zoid’s albums have achieved gold status, and she received a SAMA for Best Female Artist, and performed with international artists like John Mayer, Annie Lennox, Metallica and Hothouse Flowers. TIME Magazine and US News & World Report highlighted her role as an icon in South-African music.
