uMkhanyakude tops northern region choristers

'Perfect Peace' emerged victorious in the elimination round of the Northern Region Choral Compo.

THOUGHT to be the country’s oldest, biggest and most prestigious choral music competition, the Northern Region Choral Competition held its elimination round in Mtubatuba last month where uMkhanyakude District topped the log.

According to the Department of Arts and Culture, the competition ‘encourages and promotes choral excellence’.

Through the Northern Region Choral Competition, the department aims to lift the standard of choral music in Southern Africa to new levels, as well as enrich people’s lives, both as individuals and choristers, through their involvement in the competition.

A year-long provincial project rotating within all northern regional district municipalities, the number of choirs participating in this event has grown tremendously and continues to do so.

Adhering to certain criteria, regional eliminations deliver the best choirs to represent their respective regions in the provincial competition.

The competition consists of a Main Choir category and a Small Ensemble category.

At the elimination round in Mtubatuba last month, uMkhanyakude District’s Perfect Peace won the Main Choir category, while the choir’s solo tenor, Kevin Shange, topped the tenors in the Small Ensemble category.
