Painting pictures on silence

Empangeni High School Marching Band members share their passion for music and drumming.

A painter paints pictures on canvas. Musicians paint their pictures on silence.

Justin Wiggill (15), Pieter Joubert (18) and Renier Erasmus (18) of Empangeni High School’s (EHS) marching band sure have the Pablo Picasso touch – with the drums of course!

Travis Barker? Doesn’t stand a chance!

These guys know that you can’t play a symphony alone. It takes an orchestra to play it.

Drummers Pieter and Renier follow the lead of Justin the drum major.

An absolute variety of personalities, these guys have two things in common – music and humour!

Coincidently, all of them were inspired to be part of the marching band when they were still in primary school. The previous band members would come over and play, blowing away the minds of the audiences.

Years on and the effect remains the same.

‘Allow music to take you on a journey’ says Justin ‘Music is the one thing that connects millions of people. It carries such a big message in such a small gesture’ adds Pieter.

The guys speak one language when the music plays. There is always bound to be someone who understands and to relate to.

‘Go out there and do what it is you do, and if it is music, just know that it can take you far,’ says Renier.

As Steve Maraboli said, ‘We may place blame, give reasons and have excuses; but in the end, it is an act of cowardice not to follow your dreams.’
