Kids catch the sailing spirit

Sailing school skills youngsters for the future

THE Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) was a hive of activity all last week as no fewer than 43 youngsters attended a free sailing school.

Open to children from eight years and over, the course was run by recently qualified South African Sailing (SAS) instructor Gerrit Smit.

The training covered the SAS ‘Learn to Sail’ curriculum and trainees ended with a race on Sunday followed by prize giving and handing over of certificates to the ‘competent dinghy sailors’.

In conjunction with the NSRI, the course also incorporated a Water Wise session that focused on drowning prevention and basic CPR.

Having now been exposed to the basics, the children can participate in the Zululand Yacht Club’s development programme, which could take them up to national competition level.
