NRB determined to climb the ladder

Richards Bay FC look to accumulating points

THOSE with good soccer memories will recall Thanda Royal Zulu’s dramatic turnaround from missing relegation in the final NFD match of the 2015/16 season, to winning the title in record style the following year.

That’s the nature of sport in general, and football in particular.

I predict that Richards Bay FC will do a similar bounce-back when National First Division action resumes in January and will end up mid-table, if not in the upper half.

They did start slowly this year – too many drawn matches – but have never been outclassed.

To the contrary, they have looked superior and created more chances than their opponents in almost every encounter.

The league is incredibly competitive this year, with every team capable of beating any other.

Even log leaders Highlands Park have lost three and drawn three after 15 games (by comparison, Thanda only lost two in twice as many games).

Having lost the bulk of the top guns, the NRB side started rebuilding from scratch and is steadily improving under the astute coaching of Jean Losciuto.

The players are becoming more used to each other and the combinations look better every week.

Last weekend’s win over Black Leopards showed both good football and sheer determination, and that’s what will give them momentum when fixtures recommence.

It’s been sad to watch the numbers dwindle at the uMhlathuze Stadium, but heartening to see the core of diehard fans who can be counted on to give vocal support.

It’s also been great to see the City of uMhlathuze get behind the club with financial support.

The dream of PSL football in the city still lives, but it takes money to achieve it and we would hate to see another nightmare when – not if – that dream comes true.

Local corporates should be looking at their 2018 budgets and start making a commitment.
