2017 Sporting highlights

At the end of another year we reflect on some of the sport highlights and memories made in Zululand during 2017

January

• Richards Bay darts player Jerry Bezuidenhout finishes second at a darts tournament held at Malkerns Country Club in Swaziland.

• Proteas spin maestro Imraan Tahir plays against RH Construction King Cetshwayo for Clares at Addison Park.

February

• The Zululand golf team beats uMhlali A at the Empangeni Country Club in a KZN Golf Union League match.

• Amos Nkosi and Melanie van Rooyen bag the male and female Runner of the Year awards at the Nashua Richards Bay Athletics Club awards ceremony.

• Zululand rugby referees Casper Kruger and Andre Nel qualify for the KZN referee development panel.

March

• The Zululand women’s golf team finishes second in a triangular series tournament at Richards Bay Country Club.

• Spesihle Nene claims the 2017 Tronox 42.2km marathon crown at Addison Park.

April

• Grantleigh School’s U13A girls hockey side snatches the Tiger Wheel & Tyre Junior Open Girls Hockey title at Felixton College.

• Felixton College claim both the girls and boys hockey crowns, with Richards Bay High School netting the netball crown at the annual St Catherine’s Hockey and Netball Challenge.

• Empangeni Sports Club beats Mancosa Empangeni Rugby Club in promotion/relegation cricket match to retain first division status.

• Daniel Triggiani picks up the Fish Eagles Club Swimmer of the Year award at the local club’s prize giving ceremony.

May

• The Grantleigh girls hockey team claim second spot in the SPAR KZN Regional Schoolgirl Hockey Challenge at Grantleigh Schools.

• Local hotrod rider Jason Loosemore qualifies for the Hotrod Championships of the World event in Ipswich, England.

June

• Rugga Rhinos Golden Oldies Richards Bay players Joe Oelofse and Chris van Rooyen are selected for the South African National Golden Oldies Rugby Association squad to play the French Legends in Durban.

• Heuwelland Primary School’s Henco Kok is selected for the Sharks U12A side to compete at Craven Week.

July

• Richards Bay’s Jason Loosemore finishes 13th out of 37 competitors at the Hotrod World Finals held in Ipswich, England.

• Danie Oosthuizen reels in first prize at the popular annual 21 Species fishing competition at Meerensee Boat Club.

August

• The Richards Bay Indoor Sports Arena gets new owners.

• The Zululand rugby team is edged out 38-33 by Southern Natal in a match played at Hluhluwe Rugby Club.

• Richards Bay Christian School’s Tyrin van Rooyen is crowned world martial arts champion for sparring in his age, weight and belt category at the Unified World Championships held in Argentina.

• New Money successfully defends their Bounce Basketball League crown.
