WHILE Thanda Royal Zulu supporters are still smarting over the loss of their PSL status to AmaZulu, they have been urged to channel their emotions to supporting the ‘new kids on the block’.

As predicted in the Zululand Observer last week, the newly-formed Richards Bay Football Club (RBFC) will now occupy the uMhlathuze Stadium as they aspire to repeat the feat of the Amabhubesi and win the National First Division title.

On Thursday, the PSL officially sanctioned the sale of Thanda’s franchise to AmaZulu FC, the trading name of Lyrastar Investments (Pty) Ltd.

That paved the way for Richards Bay Football Club to become the new darlings of soccer in this region.

‘We understand the disappointment the fans feel over being denied the right to see PSL soccer in the city this year because of the circumstances.

‘We want to not only apologise to them but also commit ourselves to reaching that goal,’ said chairman and sole owner of RBFC, Jomo Biyela.

‘We urge them to please rally behind this new people’s team – we need their support.

‘We have retained the same technical team, including head coach Roger Sikhakane, and about 70% of last season’s squad are still with us, in addition to some exciting new talent so we expect to be very competitive.

‘The public will be able to see their new team in action during the annual Premier’s Cup tournament to be hosted in Richards Bay in two weeks’ time.’

NFD matches will commence in late August and Biyela said they were continuing to negotiate for corporate financial sponsorship.
