New deal for football fans

Thanda FC waits for PSL sale clearance

WHILE the sale of Thanda Royal Zulu hangs in the balance and deals are still pending, the core of players who won promotion from the NFD to the PSL last season were back in training this week.

The PSL is yet to sanction the sale of Thanda’s PSL status to AmaZulu – a transaction that would wipe out the Amabhubesi’s significant debt and put money in the coffers for bonuses, salaries and transfer fees.

But it would necessitate a change of name for the local team, and Richards Bay Football Club seems to be the chosen option.

It would also mean the uMhlathuze Stadium incumbents would have to again contest the National First Division – but at least professional soccer will be on offer for the region’s many loyal fans.

This could be the new face of professional football in the City of uMhlathuze

Other clubs have already begun enticing some of the top Thanda players – including the 2016/17 NFD leading scorer Mhlengi Cele – but the bulk of last year’s winning squad remains and they will certainly be competitive enough to win promotion once again.

Fans will also have the pleasure of watching night games under the superb floodlighting, and with the City of uMhlathuze already committed to substantial sponsorship and stadium upgrade, the disappointment at not watching PSL soccer this year may soon be eased.

The way ahead would also be further assured should corporate sponsorship be forthcoming.

While still waiting for any agreement to be sanctioned, Thanda Chairman Pierre Delvaux is adamant ‘the deal that I have so carefully crafted against all odds and pressure and criticism is the best deal for everyone. It is my personal contribution to permanent professional football in Zululand.’
