JASON Loosemore’s love for speed showed after he qualified for the Hotrod Championship of the World from 1-2 July in Ipswich, England.
The 18-year-old Felixton College pupil qualified by virtue of leading the 2017 National Hotrod Championships after two rounds.
The talented youngster, who started racing on the oval track at age five and progressed to Hotrod Class last year, will be the youngest competitor on the grid.
‘I am super excited and looking forward to the experience ahead. Being the youngest competitor does not phase me,’ said Jason.
He aims at bettering his dad Neville’s grid placing (11th), which is the highest placed South African record and bettering the highest South African placed finish (8th) by Jess Huggett in 1997.
Jason is the ninth South African to race in this event.
Competitors will complete 75, 400m laps with the hopes of clinching the coveted title.
Jason will race in a Vauxhall Tigra of Speedworth Promotions powered by an Anderson Racing 2-litre 16 valve Vauxhall Superboss engine.
His car weighs 800kg and can reach a maximum speed of 130km/h over the short straights.
Jason practices twice a month, with his fitness coming from school sports.
He plays first team cricket, hockey and rugby at Felixton College and was selected for the boys U18 uThungulu hockey side.
When not racing around, Jason can be found hanging out with friends or bodyboarding.
‘My ultimate goal is to become a professional race car driver for V8 Supercars.’
But in the meantime, Jason will study sports science and specialise in biokinetics next year.
