Richards Bay Rugby Club go on the rampage at home

Richards Bay claim second win of new season

TREVOR Montgomery and his Richards Bay squad picked up their second win of the 2017 Premier League season by smashing Jaguars 55-7 in a Fidelity Moor Cup rugby game played at the Richards Bay Rugby Club on Friday evening.

This bonus point victory gave the Bay a total of 11 log points after six games.

The first couple of minutes in the encounter was brutal, with both sides exchanging hefty hits and not giving each other an inch, which resulted in flyhalf JP Rossouw receiving a yellow card for a tackle with no arms.

As the fight for territory and ball possession continued, the home side earened a penalty, which Ruan Smit converted to hand his side an early 3-0 lead.

Once the points were recorded on the board and the home side settled down, the flood gates opened up, with JB Heunis (two) and Smit crossing the chalk line to extend their side’s lead to 24-0 at the half-time break.

Smit nailed all three conversions.

With a bonus point in the home team’s grasp and some inspirational words during the water break, Richards Bay went straight for the jugular and scored five tries to Jaguars’ one.

Thando Mbatha, Jaco Pretorius, Dylan Coulson (2) and Wiseman Nxumalo all dotted down for Richards Bay, with Smit slotting over three conversions.

The Jaguars second side failed to field a team and handed Richards Bay 2 a walkover victory.

Both sides will hit the training turf hard this week in preparation for their next encounter, which is Durban Collegians away.
