Big George ready to add his weight

Making an impact

GEORGE van Niekerk will be adding his large frame and experience to the Richards Bay Rugby Club squad come June.

The 22-year-old loose-head prop forward, who is currently a student teacher at Heuwelland Primary School, aims to be back on the park after sustaining a serious shoulder injury.

The 1.86m, 115kg powerhouse fell in love with the game at age four, growing up in a rugby crazed family and has compiled an impressive rèsumè over the years.

This includes first XV rugby a Port Natal (2011-2012), U18 KZN Bokkieweek (2011-2012), U19 SA Bokkieweek team touring Argentina (2012), captained Harlequins U18, U20 and first sides (2012-2013) and Sharks U19 (2013).

He then moved to Johannesburg and made the U19 Valke team(2013), captained the U21 and first NWU Vaal Pukke sides (2014), U21 Valke (2014), Valke Vodacom Cup squad (2014), Rhinos (2015) and Zululand (2015).

Van Niekerk follows a high protein diet, gyms five times a week and trains an additional four times a week on the field to be ready for the second half of the Premier League season.

‘I am working hard and can’t wait for my dream to come true, which is to play alongside my brother Kenny for the first time come June,’ said Van Niekerk.

He hopes to remain injury free this year and aims at going overseas in the next two years to pursue his rugby career.
