Ready for the big battle

Saints crown up for grabs

ST CATHERINE’S School is gearing up to host the 17th annual St Catherine’s Hockey and Netball Challenge on Friday and Saturday, which will see nine local high schools’ first teams (U18) competing for the honours.

Doing battle this year are Empangeni High School, eShowe Highl, Felixton College, John Ross College, Mandini, Richem Secondary School, Richards Bay Christian School, Richardsbaai Hoërskool and St Catherine’s.

Empangeni High enter the competition as defending champions, after beating Felixton College 1-0 in a closely contested final last year.

They have won the tournament five times after making seven finals in the girls section.

Felixton College dominated the boys section last year and will look for the double this year.

The local private school has a 50% win ratio, having won the tournament twice in four finals.

Their last win came at the inaugural tournament in 2001.

The netball section was introduced in 2011, with Richardsbaai Hoërskool claiming the crown.

Baatjies have won three times and enter this year as defending champions.

Friday’s action gets underway at 3pm and ends at 4.30pm, with Saturday’s action getting underway from 8am.

All teams compete in a round robin format, collecting two points for a win and one for a draw over 15-minute one-way matches on the netball courts.

Hockey sides compete in the same format, picking up three points for a win, two for a draw with a score and one for a goalless draw.
