Club hockey records goal fest at grantleigh

Local club hockey players needed no invitation to bang the ball into the back of the goal box at the Zululand Hockey League played on Grantleigh School's astroturf

LOCAL club hockey players needed no invitation to bang the ball into the back of the goal box at the Zululand Hockey League played on Grantleigh School’s astroturf on Sunday, after 20 goals were scored in the three matches contested on the day.

Richards Bay men took on a young and agile Mavericks team in the first game of the day, proving that experience and age always out plays youth, when recording a 4-1 win.

The second game of the day saw Vets and Empangeni ladies play to a 4-all draw.

Empangeni men ended the day’s action with a 7-0 drumming over Unizul.

The day had a few glitches, with four yellow and three green cards being dished out over the three games played.

Empangeni’s Laurisa Badenhorst is currently the lead goal scorer in the women’s league with seven goals, followed by Kadenza’s Michelle Emery on five and Vets striker Danielle van Onselen on four.

Youngster Caide Leaity leads the men’s league with four goals, followed by Zululand hockey chairman Anthony Meij on three and Empangeni’s Berto Basson on three.
