Seasonal change affects fishing

Fishermen working the deep waters around the Richards Bay area have experienced below par results

ANGLERS have been reaping little reward of late owing to the change of seasons.

With winter approaching, the number and quality of fish have decreased due as winter fish are slow in moving in.

If deciding to fish in the Kosi Bay area, pack a handful of bullet spoons as Snoek and King Fish seem to be loving them.

But pack in some white Chaos plugs, as they have also been working magic for the ‘Kingies’.

With the surf not being so great in Richards Bay, only inedibles have been on the bite.

Spinner Sharks have been reported taking all bait, with a number of smaller Zambezis and bigger Spinner Sharks being landed as well.

Fishermen working the deep waters around the Richards Bay area have experienced below par results.

But the avid, never-say-die guys have been rewarded with some nice size Snoek on live bait and Clark spoons.

The occasional Couta has been landed with the use of a heavier wire and stronger hook while targeting the bigger Snoek.

Jozini Dam seems to be producing a large number of Tiger Fish in the 1-3kg range.

Popular baits being used are Snoek, Shad or Couta traces as the wire and hook sizing is near perfect.

The Shad and Snoek traces are used for fillet baits, either being drifted or dragged along the bottom.

But then Barbel comes into the picture as a pest.

The Couta trace is used for live bait such as Tilapia and Carp with treble hooks all down the back ensuring a definite hook-up when the bait is smashed.
