RICHARDS Bay Rugby Club lock and flanker Raynard Scheepers trotted out for his second match for the local club’s first side on Saturday after returning from a stint in the Netherlands.

The 1.88m tall, 98kg 21-year-old plied his trade for Premier League side Diok Rugby Club between September and December last year.

‘It was an amazing experience and a great opportunity to improv my game and remain fit for the new season back home,’ said Scheepers.

‘They play a much faster, running game than we do, which helped improve my overall play.’

Scheepers, who started playing rugby at Heuwelland Primary School as a youngster, represented Pionier Hoërskool’s First XV in 2013 and the Richards Bay Rugby Club first team last year.

He was a member of the side that won the First Division title and picked up the Most Improved Youngster award.

‘I am super excited about the new season and cannot wait to add my new-found knowledge and experience to the team. The intensity and physicality of the local Premier League will take some getting used to.

‘I would love to win the Player of the Year award this season for my club and make the Sharks XV rural team.’

Raynard trains five times a week in the gymnasium, working on strength and endurance.

He also trains three times a week with the team.
