Three Zululand fighters go pro

It's the money and the box show for local fighters

THREE amateur fighters from the Freddie Rafferty Horn Boxing Club have punched their way into the professional ranks after being awarded their licences from Boxing South Africa (BSA) last Saturday.

Former national champion Freddie Rafferty pushed Joshua Pretorius, Petrus Cilliers and Paul Stolz into the ring at the Ludonga Boxing Gym in Durban, where 50 amateurs tested their readiness in a sparring session.

Female fighter Bianca Nortje, coached by Freddie Rafferty, has won all her bouts at district level

Rafferty was one of five judges on the panel, which included veteran referees and coaches such as Darryl Ribbink, Hardy Mileham and BSA Manager Les Andreason.

Rafferty says the fighters were required to prepare for three rounds of two minutes each and 42 entrants were able to secure their licences.

Rafferty also coaches local 16-year-old female boxing wonder Bianca Nortje.
