WITH wickets falling like tenpins, RH Construction uThungulu were bundled out for a meagre 73 runs in their
Castle Premier League game against University of KZN at Addison Park on Sunday.
Despite a late start, batting first and the game reduced to 46 overs because of Saturday’s rain – this was in fact the only match played in the province over the weekend – uThungulu had no excuse for their pitiful performance at the crease.
The only positive on a dismal scorecard was opener Simon Savides, who faced 74 balls in a 111 minute stay to accrue 34 runs.
He never looked in trouble until he nicked one of the few deliveries that moved sharply, and was caught behind.
For the rest, it was a catalogue of wickets being thrown away through careless shots, lack of application and poor decision making.
The fall of wickets tells the story: 1/4, 2/4, 3/20, 4/29, 5/33, 6/42, 7/64, 8/70, 9/71, 10/73.
The innings folded in the 25th over.
For the visitors the damage was done by Cameron Gordon (4/9), Kyle Scrimgeour (3/17) and Wade Canham (2/26).
It didn’t take the students long to wrap up an easy victory, passing the meagre home total with three wickets down.
Ruan van Rensburg did best with the ball, claiming 2/15.
A disappointing start to the year and a performance uThungulu need to put behind them with some tough games ahead.
