Charitable angler hooks a big one

Super marlin landed off Bay.

GAMEFISH anglers are smiling, with a number of good catches reported in the new year to enhance the region’s reputation as a tourist fishing destination.

Topping the list is a magnificent blue marlin, weighed in at the Richards Bay Ski Boat Club late on Thursday by lucky angler Dawie Kotze.

Fishing off Deon Auby’s boat ‘Rampage’, skippered by Trevor Hanssen, the magnificent marlin was hooked on a plastic lure in front of Dawson’s.

It proved a tough contest, requiring plenty of skill by the men on the ski boat.

‘The fish ran out about 500 metres of line and jumped all the way,’ said experienced Bay deep sea angler Dawie, now living with his family in Nelspruit.

‘Unfortunately the leader wrapped around the tail with all the jumping and the fish drowned while we fought it, otherwise it would have been released.

‘It took me 1 hour and 45 minutes to bring the fish up and we decided to load the fish as it was dead and donate it to charity.

‘The fish weight was 232kg (5 11lbs), with a length of 2.87m and girth of 1.52m.’
