‘How’s that one?’

'We want to welcome anyone interested in joining the umpiring family'

THE uThungulu Cricket Umpires Association was started back in August last year, owing to the lack of local active umpires within uThungulu.

‘RH Construction uThungulu and KZN Coastals manager Bryan van Aswegen approached me to get the Association running again, with the aim of aiding school, club and district cricket,’ said uThungulu Cricket Umpires Association chairperson Thomas Arthur Chilcott.

There are currently 10 active umpires registered to the Association, who have officiated school, club, premier and district games this season within the uThungulu area.

Anyone interested in joining the Association can sign up by contacting Chilcott on 071 6433245.

‘We want to welcome anyone interested in joining the umpiring family. Once one signs up, they have one year to get their CSA Level 1 qualification, whilst gaining practical experience.’

The platform has been laid for local umpires wanting to pursue a career in the field, as the Association will hold an umpiring course in Empangeni in January. (See press for further details).

CSA Level 1 allows an umpire to officiate school to premier league games; Level 2 allows an umpire to officiated district to CSA cricket weeks; with Level 3 allowing umpires to officiate Coca-Majola to Varsity leagues.

Once one gets to level 3, then one needs to be invited to further their career with more tests.

The 2017 committee is as follows: Chairperson – Thomas Arthur Chilcott, Vice Chairperson – Muthula Mgwenya, Secretary – Thomas Chilcott Senior, Treasurer – Chris Ndlovu and Life Member – Professor Albert Basson.
