#wicketsmustfall trumps #weneedruns

The batting line-up worked together forming a solid wall of resistance against the attack

MANCOSA Empangeni Rugby Cricket Club’s (MERCC) ‘cricket presentation’ to the Unizul XI team was pin point and accurate, with the presenters having an answer for every question in their second division 24 Over 8 Ball League at Mick Kelly Park on Saturday.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat first on the astroturf pitch.

‘With the scorching heat, it was a no brainer to bat first. My plan was to send the Unizul lads out to field in the heat first and get tired before having to chase our total down,’ said MERCC captain Piet Pieterse.

The batting line-up worked together forming a solid wall of resistance against the students attack, posting 178/5 in their allotted overs.

Wade Edge (38 not out), Warren Graff (33), JC Anderson (31) and Pieter van Rooyen (30) all stood firm with their ‘batons’.

Lungelo Buthelezi 3/20 in 4 and Sandile Radebe 1/29 in 3 were the only two bowlers to cause discomfort in the home side’s batting line-up.

Unfortunately the students game plan of ‘#weneedruns’ failed, being dismissed for 93 in the 23rd over.

Nhlanhla Khumalo lead from the front with 27, backed up by Buthelezi (18).

But the lethal force of Victor Campher (4/38 in 6) and Graff (3/14 in 5) was too much to handle for the students.
