Extreme case of run drought

Local cricket girls back in action on the field

ST CATHERINE’S first girls cricket team were left with a sour taste in their mouths last week despite having two bites at the red apple.

The girls first went down by eight wickets to an eSikhawini Invitational XI on Wednesday and then again on Thursday by nine wickets to Grantleigh.

In Wednesday’s fixture, the visitors won the toss and elected to field first.

St Catherine’s managed 61/8 in their 15 overs, with Betty Adetiba top-scoring with 5 runs and the bulk of the runs being made up from extras.

eSikhawini needed just nine overs to reach 63/2 to claim a comfortable victory.

Saints were back in action on Thursday against Grantleigh in a game that saw a ton of wides being delivered by both teams.

Grantleigh captain Danielle van Onselen won the toss and elected to field first.

‘The pitch was not going to change during the two innings and I wanted to know what total to chase down,’ she said.

Saints reached 34/8 in their 15 overs, with captain Deanne Reddy top scoring with 2 not out.

Grantleigh bowled no fewer than 30 wides, which aided the home team’s tally.

Spinner Chené van Wyk took 3/4 in 3, with speedsters Jamie Reilly and Tasmin Anderson ending with figures of 2/5 in 3 and 2/3 in 2 respectively.

Van Onselen lead the run chase, smashing the only two boundaries of the game and remaining unbeaten at the crease on 10.
