Webster nurtures young talent

Their first paddle together was a 25km stretch from Richards Bay to Nhlabane

LOCAL paddling stalwart Craig Webster has taken development paddler Sipho Qoko under his wing.

The youngster from Soweto has been paddling for seven years, but was only familiar with dams and rivers – until he met Craig.

Webster introduced Sipho to the challenging sea waters recently when he spent a week in Richards Bay.

‘ It was amazing, but very difficult compared to rivers,’ said Sipho.

Their first paddle together was a 25km stretch from Richards Bay to Nhlabane in a strong headwind.

But Sipho did not give up and showed his potential by finishing second by 200th of a second in the Zululand Kayak Club time trial.

The pair is training hard in the gym and out at sea for ‘something big’ at the end of the year.
