Richardia makes it a clean sweep

Goals galore at annual soccer tournament

RICHARDIA Primary School claimed the girls and boys crowns at the annual Felixton College Tiger Wheel and Tyre junior school soccer tournament on Saturday, after both sides maintained their cool under pressure and won their respective penalty shoot-outs.

Sixteen local primary schools participated, following a round robin format.

The girls competition had two pools. In pool A Madlankala, Grantleigh, Heuwelland, St Catherine’s and Empangeni Preparatory did battle, while Felixton College, Richardia, Richards Bay Christian School and eShowe Junior School fought it out in Pool B.

Grantleigh topped pool A with 10 points, followed by Heuwelland on 8, with Richardia topping pool B on 5 points, followed by Felixton College on 4.

Grantleigh went on to book their spot in the finals by beating the host school 1-0 in the first semi final, with Richardia beating Heuwelland 2-1 on penalties after a goalless draw at the final whistle.

The final was a cracker, with both sides having numerous opportunities, but failing to capatilise.

With no goals scored, the teams headed into a penalty shoot-out, with Richardia sealing the deal with a 2-0 win.

The boys section saw four pools competing.

eShowe Junior School topped pool A with 7 points, Empangeni Preparatory pool B with 9 points, Richardia pool C with 9 points and Felixton College pool D with 7 points.

Richardia beat eShowe Junior School 3-1 in the first semi-final, with Empangeni Preparatory beating Felixton College 1-0.

Again with no goals scored at the hooter, matters had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, which Richardia won 3-0.
