Humdinger clashes at sevens rugby

Grantleigh and Richards Bay High claim U18 and U15 sevens title

SPEED, agility and slick ball handling were key at the 4th annual Richards Bay Christian School sevens rugby tournament played at the Richards Bay Rugby Club on Friday.

Nine local schools competed in two pools in the U15 and U18 age groups, following a round robin format.

Richards Bay High School (RBHS) beat rivals Empangeni High School (EHS) 19-12 in the first U15 semi-final game, with Grantleigh beating James Nxumalo Agri High School 15-12.

The final was a humdinger, with Richards Bay claiming the title after narrowly beating Grantleigh 12-10.

James Nxumalo finished third after comfortably beating EHS 41-0 in the play-off for third place.

The U18 age group saw seven sides competing for glory.

Grantleigh played in the first semi-finals against EHS after dominating in the pool stages.

The private school booked their spot in the final after coming out on top 17-0.

In the other semi, RBHS went down 15-18 to a well-balanced Felixton College outfit in a closely contested battle.

Grantleigh were crowned champions after beating Felixton 20-7 in the final.

EHS claimed third spot, beating RBHS 12-7 in the play-off.

Competing schools on the day were – Grantleigh Schools, Richards Bay Christian School, James Nxumalo Agri High School, Felixton College, Richards Bay High School, Empangeni High School, John Ross College, Mandini Academy and Ashton College.

Felixton College will host the next sevens tournament on Friday.
