Motzouris duo take charge in USA

The brothers are currently lying first and second after four rounds of racing in the USA Pro Watercross Pro Ski GP class.

EMPANGENI’S water race aces Tyron and Dustin Motzouris are literally making waves, charging through 130 of the world’s best jet ski racers in the USA, taking wins and filling up podium spots at consecutive race meetings.

The brothers are currently lying first and second after four rounds of racing in the USA Pro Watercross Pro Ski GP class, with Tyron leading Dustin by just one point.

The ZO caught up with Tyron just before a pre-race weekend nap, and chatted about how things were going down in the US-of-A.

Round three – Reno, Nevada
‘I raced in the premier Pro Ski GP class and the entire weekend turned out to be a battle between myself and Dustin.
‘Dustin won the first moto on Saturday with me just behind in second, while Ian Roberts (USA) took third.

A weekend of racing involves three heats the riders call ‘motos’, with points allocated as per position finished, with the highest total of points earning you the overall winner trophy.

‘In the second moto on Sunday I got the hole shot while Dustin stalled at the start. He managed to pull off an amazing race coming from last place right into second at the finish.

‘The third race had me battling with Brock Austin (USA) at the start, but I managed to pull away and create a lead which I kept.

Brock and Dustin finished second and third respectively, leaving me with the overall win for the weekend.’

Fourth Round – St George, Utah
Tyron went into the fourth round as the overall points leader in Pro Ski GP, which he managed to cling onto despite having a tough weekend.

‘Our team struggled all weekend with the tuning on our skis owing to the extremely hot conditions, with temperatures reaching 44 degrees.

‘There were three races again, the first on Friday night.

‘I managed a really good start but had a big crash around the first turn and had to fight back from 15th place to sixth.

Tyron continued to battle with his starts for the next two races, but succeeded in clinching two fourth places, giving him a one point lead over Dustin in the championship.

‘Dustin had a really solid weekend with three second place finishes and taking second place overall for the meet,’ said Tyron.

Toshi Ohara (Japan) had a flawless weekend with two firsts and a fifth place for the overall win.

‘Dustin and I are racing our Kommander K1 hulls that are built in Empangeni by our company, Z-Craft, and are fitted with 200hp 1300cc Kawasaki engines.

‘Four out of the top five riders in round four raced on our K1 hull, which is a huge achievement for us.’
